Our own Cody Waters was our program today and shared all the great things the Boys & Girls Club of Lenawee (BGC) is doing in this community. He finished with a very nice video. The club location is at the former Drager Middle School off of Frank Street even though their address is Church Street! They were at one time located at the Piotter Center In 2013, Cody said, the then Superintendent, Chris Timmis announced that the pool there would no longer be used. So, it was given to the BGC! Team Room and a Game Room is all that existed when the club opened. They now expanded the operation to include a cafeteria. And enough space for 5 programs. They now serve about 30 kids a day. Pre-Pandemic numbers were at 145. This club shut down, unfortunately, in March of 2020 but has now reopened (July 6th, 2021). This club attracts kids from a number of other school districts like Sand Creek, LCS, etc., Cody said. In 2005 club in Hudson opened, Cody said. While it was closed during the Pandemic, it is open now and serving about 20-30 kinds a day, he said. They are typically only students from the Hudson area, Cody said. Cody said that fundraising efforts have been very successful especially with the help of the S.L. Hickman Foundation who made a donation in the amount of seven figures and subject to a match for an endowment in unison with a capital campaign. The BGC’s endowment fund is currently around $2M! Cody mentioned the importance of “Social/Emotional Learning” and how critical it was to the kids they were currently serving with the help of Adrian Public Schools in order to provide a more effective delivery of these skills. Cody said that the effort to continue to connect with others in the community was key to providing effective programming to those his organization serves. |
