President Chip was the program today and covered many of the accomplishments of this new Rotary year! He began by saying that much momentum has already taken place. So far this year, he said, the club has contributed $20,000 to various worthy causes! At the board meeting this past Wednesday night, members approved to bestow the title of Honorary Member on Frank Dick, Masahiro Kojima and Mark Murray! He mentioned that Frank is being cared for by Hospice and that anyone who wanted to visit him following today's meeting could do so. President Chip told members that Jim Berryman said Masahiro's health is declining rapidly.
President Chip said that Mohinder is Chair of our International Committee and since Moriyama, Japan is our Sister City and, because the Rotary Club of Moriyama celebrated their 50th anniversary at the time we celebrated our 100th, plans are being made to make their president an Honorary member as well so that we might consider engaging in a Global Grant like we did with Delhi, India in 2020. Also, since Brazeway is now owned by a Swedish company, we might want to reach out to Rotary Clubs there to further our international relationships.
The board at Wednesday's meeting approve of the following expenditures: $2,500 to Neighbors of Hope for their vinyl fence; $1,000 to the Adrian Symphony Orchestra; $200 to the River Raisin Cleanup; $400 to the Back to School Event on September 9th; $1,000 to the Taste of Lenawee; $1,250 to the Share a Bench Project with the AM Club on the Planewave property.
Following the presentation, President Chip told members to pick one of four tables to sit at where the chairs of the following committees were at to discuss plans for the future: International (Mohinder), Membership (Bob), Community Service (Nate) and Social (Greg).

Get Well Wishes – President Chip announced that Doug Herrera is out of the hospital and back to work part time!
River Raisin Cleanup – Remember that this upcoming event is scheduled for August 27th from 9am-1pm starting at the trail head on West Maumee where we start the annual Bike Tour next to Dollar General. Invite anyone you know who would like to help. Bring your own tools - Rakes, pruners, clippers, shovels, etc. Looking for a good turnout. Rotarians who signed up will be team leaders, Mark said. The City of Adrian DPW will be on hand with chain saws and other equipment. If you want to brave the water, you can!
Colleges Back to School WELCOME – Thursday, September 8th at the four corners in downtown Adrian. Need a co-chair which I believe Catherine Sala volunteered for. Starts at 5pm to about 7 or 8pm. We’ll be handing out bottled water and sweets that Mark and Mary will bring that afternoon. Thanks to them both for their individual efforts! President Chip said that he was buying drinks at Chaloner's afterwards!
Adrian City Band Concerts – Greg mentioned that at the last concert, the public donated $767! When added to the total of money raised at the other 11 concerts, it comes to about $3,000. Our club matched that amount so will be presenting them with a check for $6,000! Wow! Thanks to everyone who helped out this summer!! During the 12 concerts, the band played 115 different arrangements, Greg said. The total number of musicians that participated totalled 98 ranging in ages from 15-85. The average number at each concerts was about 65 musicians!
Lenawee Bike Tour Update – Carrieannounced that the committee met last Tuesday evening at the Red Lobster. The SAG locations have been set. Nate announced at today's meeting that sponsor donations will come in close to $24,000. AWESOME JOB!! Kathy Williams has recorded the radio spots with a couple more yet to come. They will be aired soon on WLEN.

On October 9, 2020, President Donald J. Trump appointed Michael G. Lawrence to a three-year term on the Board. Mr. Lawrence entered the Senior Executive Service in 1999. He retired in June 2019 after a 20+ year career in the Intelligence Community (IC) where he held leadership positions at several IC components. In his last assignment, he set up and then served as the Director of the Enterprise Functional Team at the National Security Agency (NSA). Previously, he served as the Senior Advisor to the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) from 2013 to 2018.
In this role, he was responsible for advising the DNI and other IC senior leaders on capabilities, policy, coordination, and oversight relating to Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Between 2008 and 2013, Mr. Lawrence served as the National Security Agency Chair at the National Defense University (NDU) at Ft. McNair. In this role, he was the highest-ranking Intelligence Officer at NDU. As a member of the faculty, he taught courses on Strategic Leadership and Executive Communication for Strategic Leaders, Space and Industry, Media and Industry, and courses on regional security issues. Mr. Lawrence was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Award by the Joint Chiefs of Staff for instructing the next generation of Senior Military leaders.
Mr. Lawrence served as the Director in the Office of Strategic Communications, Business Plans, and Operations at the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) from 2007 to 2008 where he was responsible for directing and implementing all NRO interactions with the Congress, IC, and other Executive branch agencies, the press, and the private sector. Mr. Lawrence received the NRO’s Distinguished Service Medal for his work. Between 2001 and 2007, he served as the Principal Director for Legislative Affairs at the NSA and provided critical leadership in shepherding critical legislation through Congress to support the NSA’s post-9/11 Mission. He received the Director’s Distinguished Service Medal for this work to support NSA’s mission. Mr. Lawrence began his career at the Office of National Drug Control Policy in the legislative affairs office, rising to become the Acting Director. Mr. Lawrence graduated with honors from John Jay College, with a BS in Criminal Justice. He also attended Western Michigan University Law School. Currently, Mr. Lawrence is a volunteer with Sowing Seeds in Marshfield, MA.
Pork Out - On August 27 from 4-6pm at Planewave at the pavilion near Sam Beauford Workshop. Need volunteers to help cook ribs, pork chops, sausage patties, ham and BBQ pork thanks to President Chip and Greg for purchasing a prize pig from the 4H Club during the Lenawee County Fair.
