Stories
June 9, 2022
Chip, soon to be our president, was our speaker today and highlighted his experience at last weekend’s Rotary International Convention in Houston. He said he learned a lot and met many Rotarians around the world. This was the first RI Convention after 2 years due to COVID. In 2019 the event was held in Hamburg, Germany. This year, Chip said, 200 countries were represented. Compare that to 193 which is the total number of countries that are part of the United Nations! This year’s event, he said, hosted approximately 11,000 people. Next year the venue will be Melbourne, Australia and they anticipate 40,000 people to attend! Next will be Singapore and that is expected draw 40,000+ people! In 2024, the venue will be Calgary, Canada.

The House of Friendship was the main room of the convention. He spoke about meeting Rotarians from Zambia and purchased a shirt from members of the Livingston club which is their biggest fundraiser. He also met a member of the Chicago Club #1 in Evanston, IL! The very club met after Rotary was founded! He met another Rotarian from Sweden, Michael Holt, and shared with him the time Chip (whose Mother is Swedish) hosted a Swedish Exchange Student in 1980. He spoke about a Rotarian he met from Ohio whose mission is to get photos of all members who are WWII veterans, Chip quickly said that he could get one for him – our own Frank Dick, of course who is also from Ohio. He told the story of a female Rotarian from Kenya Trees for Peace project as the result of the terrorist attack at a mall in Kenya in 2015. She was there, and a survivor but lost a daughter in the attack. She plants trees for survivors of attacks like these around the world.

Chip said that at his first lunch he sat next to a District Governor from France and first tome attendee whose signature card was a printed piece of cloth with a picture on it! He went on to say he had lunch also with Rotarians from Brazil, Ecuador and Ontario. Another Rotarian he met who was a contractor by trade rode his bike from St. Louis to Houston!

Great recap, Chip. Thanks for representing our club. He will have more to say at our Changeover Dinner, he said.
