Today’s speaker, Bill Wise from Crime Stoppers was invited by Kathye Herrera to speak to the club today. In 2001, Bill was one of the founding members of Crime Stoppers in Lenawee County. It is a non-profit organization which partners with the community, media and law enforcement to solve and prevent crimes through anonymous tips and education. With anonymity and the offer of small rewards, people are motivated to text, phone or Facebook information they have regarding crimes even in cases which may implicate friends or family.
Crime Stoppers was brought to Lenawee County thanks to then Sherriff Larry Richardson and is now coordinated by Detective Gary Ward out of the County dispatch center. Any enforcement agency in the County is welcome to make requests for information especially regarding their “Cold Case” felonies.
Crime stoppers then advertises for tips, relays those back to the agency and finally determines a reward for the tipster. The problem right now is that they barely have enough money to cover their software and insurance which amounts to $1750 per year let alone afford advertising or rewards…that explains why we haven’t seen or heard much from them over the past eight months or so. Any donation would be appreciated.
