Sam Beauford Workshop

Luke Barnett, Adrian Noon Club member, was today's program.

The organization was founded by Luke Barnett and Dena Koehn. Luke Barnett is a professional chair maker winning many awards and exhibiting in galleys all over the world. Dena is a graduate of Adrian College with BFA with a focus on studio arts and a BA in English with a focus on writing.

Luke started teaching his craft around the country in 2014 and was teaching with a local art center in 2015. The classes gained popularity with the local community. In 2015 the City of Adrian approached the duo with an opportunity to take over an old power plant that had been vacant for 10 years and was in serious disrepair. They accepted the offer and got to work. With the rapidly growing support, Dena and Luke came to the realization that what they were creating was much bigger than they originally thought.

In early 2017 they formed an organization called the Sam Beauford Woodshop, donated all the equipment and tools that they had accumulated, and started with a modest board of 3 people. Fast forward to 2020, the SBWI has grown at an incredibly healthy and rapid rate, taking on zero debt. We now have a board of 10 members and offer educational opportunities 7 days per week. Luke is now a full time employee of the school and works with other artists from all over Michigan with a goal of teaching the craft. *Sam Beauford is the name of a dog owned by Luke during his career as a chairmaker.
