President Carrie is shown here holding the new district theme flag for the 2024-25 Rotary year and Nick Krayacich will be our new district governor replacing Russ Jones. Assistant DG, Rhonda, told members that the branding for the District going forward will mean that our district will not have a separate theme from that of the new RI President. RENEWAL OF NON-HOMESTEAD OPERATING MILLAGE
Nate Parker, Superintendent of Adrian Public Schools along with Dan Pena, APS Business Manager, were on hand today to inform members of the Non-Homestead and Library millage on the ballot this coming May 7th. Particulars are shown below and was a handout at today's meeting.

Nate and Dan also spoke to the District Library millage also on the ballot. Here are the particulars as it will appear on the May 7th ballot (In red):

The Adrian District Library will have a millage proposal on the ballot for the May 7, 2024 election. The library's current operating millage was approved by voters in 2015 and expires in December 2024.  The library is asking for a renewal of the current millage rate of 2.4817 mills and an increase of .0183 mill to restore the original 2.5 mills that voters approved in 2015. The library is asking for the millage for a period of ten (10) years, 2025 to 2034.

The official language on the ballot is:

Adrian District Library

Library Millage Proposal

Shall the Adrian District Library, County of Lenawee, State of Michigan, be authorized to levy annually an amount not to exceed:

2.5 mills ($2.50 on each $1,000 of taxable value), of which 2.4817 mills is a renewal of the previously authorized millage rate that will expire in 2024 and .0183 mill is new additional millage to restore the millage rate lost as a result of Headlee Amendment millage reductions, against all taxable property within the Adrian District Library district for a period of ten (10) years, 2025 to 2034, inclusive, for the purpose of providing funds for all district library purposes authorized by law? The estimate of the revenue the Adrian District Library will collect in the first year of the levy (2025) if the millage is approved and levied by the Library is approximately $1,200,000. By law, a portion of the revenue from the millage may be captured by the City of Adrian Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.

Jacob announced that we are still looking for a member to fill this position. He and Bob Gardner will be pitch hitting until a permanent chair is found. Jacob said he has reached out to a number of organizations to explore what kinds of service projects they might have that we could assist them with. Jacob is looking for ideas from members as well. A committee will be assembled in the meantime so we can launch some projects in the near future.

Proud Sponsor
Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

TODAY'S PROGRAM
Heather Pearce
South Michigan Food Bank

Heather Pearce, Coordinator of the South Michigan Food Bank, was introduced by our Program Chair, Londa, and shared some very interesting facts with us about the great work they do to combat food insecurity across 8 counties in Michigan.

There are 200 food banks in the US, Heather said. Every county in the US is supported by one of them. Food pantries, soup kitchens, etc. Over 360 partner agencies in 8 counties that the South Michigan Food Bank serves!

"In 2023", she said, "our agency partners grew to include over 360 locations across our 8-county service area! In 2023, together with our donors, volunteers, and partners, we distributed 11,106,970 pounds of food!" The counties include: Branch, Barry, Calhoun, Hillsdale, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lenawee, and St. Joseph.

The food bank, Heather said, has grown from a small group of people believing in this mission to an organization that reaches thousands of people each year. "We partner with 360+ agencies over eight Michigan counties to make sure that everyone has access to the nutrition they need to succeed. These agencies are organizations like schools, churches, and other nonprofits that run distribution sites for pantries, Fresh Food Distributions, and other programs". Keep up the awesome work, Heather. It was great to have you speak today!
