Tom Crites was our speaker today thanks to Chip who met Tom in Hillsdale about a year ago at a shooting center where Tom was an instructor. As they talked Chip found out that Tom was not only a pilot but a deep sea diver as well. Tom suggested that Chip watch the movie "The Last Breath" and then contacted him to see if he would speak to our club to which he agreed. Tom is now retired as a saturation diver but still a full time shooting instructor. He recounted the intense things that happened to the main character in this movie as well as a couple of close encounters he, himself, went through when he was a diver at 600 feet below the sea. The documentary takes place in the North Sea which is between the UK and Norway around huge oil rigs (North Sea oil rigs) which they are down there to repair. Divers work in 10-12 hour shifts 24/7, Tom said.

He shared with us many interesting things that happen at depths between 300-600 feet in water. He mentioned that a person diving at this depth generally is in water pressure 10-20 times greater than what we experience on the surface of the earth. Divers, at this depth do not breath air but compressed gas called Heliox which is a mixture of Helium and Oxygen, he said. This requires divers to first under what is called "saturation". They are saturated with Heliox until their bodies cannot absorb any more.

They live at 400 feet in hyperbaric chambers for approximately 4 weeks. To saturate or compress , Tom said, it takes one day for every 100 feet of depth you were at so in this case - 4 days which takes place after the 4 weeks. When diving, they are fastened to an umbilical cord attached to the "bell" on the chamber which supplies gas, water, electricity and communication lines to each diver.  Tom mentioned the importance of the  "DP" - dynamic positioning system which tracks a divers whereabouts and when that fails, as it does to the diver in the movie who on the top of a sub manifold at the time, Tom said, he is left to simply float away and get lost at the bottom of the sea.

Be sure and watch The Last Breath if you haven't already. It is riveting and we thank Tom for sharing such an interesting story with us.
