Jere began by entertaining us with a Croswell trivia game and handing out $5 beverage coupons for correct answers. Yours truly scored a coupon i think for providing the most incorrect answers. The following are a few of the historical facts we learned.
The Croswell was built in 1866 by famous attorney Charles Croswell. His law partner at the time was none other than Thomas Cooley.
Thomas Edison spoke in both 1913 & 1914 with his talking Kinetophone.
In 1967 "The Sound of Music" was the last movie played.
The Croswell's annual budget is $1,000,000. Of which, $125,000 is from individual members.
It is estimated that the theater brings 2.5 million to the local economy.
John Phillip Sousa's famous band appeared several times in the late 1800's.
The Croswell has put on 19 shows since 2012.
There are 641 seats.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the name of the resident bat is Herbie.
Jere has been with the Croswell for 4 years. Since that time the budget has grown from $600,000 to the $1 million it is now. It's always a struggle to balance the budget, but even with that they are looking toward capital improvements which include a better stage lighting/sound system and more bathrooms. Membership and donations are the life blood of the theater. Jere closed by saying that the Croswell is NOT just another community theater; it is of Regional Professional Quality.
