It was great to have Kathy Sielsky, Reading Specialist for Michener Elementary, visit us again and speak about the upcoming Fluency Friends program - the first time in over 2 years! As we all know, Fluency Friends is a program started many years ago at Michener Elementary school. Mary Murray is the chair of this project and we thank her for staying in touch with Kathy the entire time we've not had the opportunity to reengage in this important project.Fluency Friends utilizes adults who volunteer for a brief amount of time every week helping students read. Volunteers are matched up and trained by Kathy should they wish to get involved. The school works around the volunteer’s schedule to find a workable time during the school day for them and will match them up with specific students. The primary skills that volunteers would be working on with students are their accuracy as well as the speed and smoothness of their reading all of which affect their comprehension. Volunteering for such an important important role allows people to make a huge impact on these children’s lives as mentors and insure their success as adults in the future in this community.
Our club has supported this program every year by purchasing $1.000 in books each year that students can take home with them and keep to read over the summer break. The stickers that we purchase to place in each book is shown here.
Should you wish to volunteer (1) you can select a time any day during the school week between 8:30am and 3:00pm to volunteer (2) you may choose a routine day and time each week to volunteer (3) you would spend up to 12-15 minutes each time you meet with a student - whatever fits your schedule.
