Boy Scouts of America - Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson, a Unit Services Director for the Boy Scouts of America who lives in Manchester actually grew up in Hudson. The BSoA is broken down into 4 field offices in Michigan, she said and serves the Southern Shores Field Service Council encompassing Lenawee and Hillsdale Counties.

To prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Cub scouts serve the youngest population (Kindergarten to 5^th grade) and belong to dens and complete various projects and work with their families to earn rank, she said.

The next level is Scouts USA – 11 to 17 year olds and the program is guided by adult volunteers. Their Venturing program is for youth (up to 20 year olds) who earn badges and awards. These individuals focus on leadership, personal growth and service.

Exploring is part – a career exploration program for youth ages 14 through 20 years old. Some Exploring posts are housed within several fire departments, she said, and give them experience with firefighting so they may consider making it their career in the future. Trade skills that used to be taught in our local schools is not part of the BSoA programming, Rachel said.

The Boy Scouts is now named Family Scouting since it is no longer limited to just boys. This started back in 2018 with the Cub Scouts, she said. It was in February of this year that the program allowed girls to join.

New Member - Aaron Hacker was inducted two weeks ago as our newest member. He was sponsored by Mark Murray and formerly inducted by Mary.

September 21 – Lenawee Bike Tour - Lenawee Bike Tour – Finishing touches are being made. We’ll be at the Adrian Armory and Events Center from 6-8pm for Riders to pick up their packets. Registration on Saturday begins at 7am with the first wave of bikers leaving at around 8:30am. Need another person at the SAG station on Canandaigua

September 21 – Star Gazing Event – at PlaneWave property that evening.

September 24 – One Rotary Summit

September 30 – Annual District Governor’s Golf Outing

October 19 – Euchre Night – Thanks to Carrie Dillion we will be playing cards at the Hidden River clubhouse (entrance by Breadbox off Beecher Road) from 6pm-9pm. If you don’t play, we will have a table of board games. Another club social so please bring your preferred drink and snacks.

October 24 - World Polio Day. Our club will be hosting and invites will be sent to all other Rotary clubs in the county.

November 14-16 – R.Y.L.A – Our club will be selecting 1-2 Junior/Senior high schools students to attend this annual leadership event. We’ll need drivers to and from the event for the students attending. If you know of some student who would like to attend please let Nelson know. He has applications and more info. Gerry Burg will be assisting our club identify students who will participate.

November 20 (This is a Wednesday) – Lync Up (formerly the Art of Mingling event).

New RI President - 2019-20

Mark Daniel Maloney, of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, is the new President of Rotary International for 2019-20. Maloney is a principal in the law firm of Blackburn, Maloney, and Schuppert LLC, with a focus on taxation, estate planning, and agricultural law. He represents large farming operations in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States, and has chaired the American Bar Association’s Committee on Agriculture in the section of taxation. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar Association, and the Alabama Law Institute.
