TODAY'S PROGRAM

PE Bob Gardner

Court Security Guard

Thanks, Bob, for stepping in without hesitation in the absence of today's scheduled speaker and telling us what you do for the court system in Lenawee County.

Bob has a very important and responsible role in the Lenawee County Courthouse serving as a Court Security representative. One of his duties is to back up other security guards who are looking for individuals violating various rules and regulations. He said he also monitors the camera systems throughout the building and at other county sites.

People coming in for a bench warrant hearing for instance, he said, will walk past security and go through the metal detection system. Then they are handcuffed and taken to the office where their respective public defender is and he waits outside the office until they are done. Once finished, Bob calls the bailiff in the assigned courtroom telling them the individual is ready and are lead to the courtroom where Bob stays with them. The respective judge hands down their decision and, most times he said, they are released at which time Bob will personally escort them out of the building.

Others, however, may be required to spend the night in jail at which time a sheriff's deputy will escort them back to the jail. All prisoners coming to Adrian from other jails are always accompanied by two officers, Bob said, but when they enter the Lenawee County Courthouse, court security guards escort them to wherever they're going and even sit with them in the courtroom.

Anytime alarms go off in the building, judges immediately return to their quarters.  Court security guards immediately man the cameras to determine who set it off and in what location. The entire courthouse is then locked down. Court security guards also cover for bailiffs who, for whatever reason, don't show up in a courtroom when they are supposed to.

When asked what all Bob was supplied with on his outer carrier vest and belt he said: Flashlight, 2 sets of handcuffs, tourniquet, mace, and a firearm with 51 rounds. If individuals are compliant, they are handcuffed in the front; if not, they are handcuffed in the back. Bob said that they do not use tasers in the courthouse. Sounds like an exciting job, Bob. Thanks for sharing.

Ballots were passed around and members were asked to submit a secret vote for one of 2 candidates who are seeking election to this position. Therese Maggiancalda from the Passport to Service Rotary Club received the most votes. Consequently, based on our club size, this equates to one (1) vote that our club was eligible to cast. Yours Truly will let DG Nick know.

LENAWEE BIKE EVENT
Bob announced to the members that he spoke with Jacob Cooper and it will be a "GO" again this year. Our primary goal is just get sponsors. They will need everyone's help with this. Doesn't look like we'll give our sponsors T-shirts again this year but possibly to private donors. The Committee will be looking for SAG Station volunteers. They may be looking for a new start location like Bohn Pool that has indoor bathrooms. Saturday, September 27th appears to be a good date for the event in light of reviewing events that might be in conflict. Routes are being reviewed.

Patty announced to members that Midwest Energy will be matching any gifts to the Imagination Library.
