Program Chair, Londa Pickles, introduced our speakers today - Jessica and Heather from H.E.R. Refuge.
H.E.R. (Heal. Empower. Restore.) Refuge, they said, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the goal of creating a free, biblically-based, long-term residential treatment program for female adolescents residing in Lenawee County.
The organization serves girls, ages thirteen to seventeen, who are battling depression, anxiety, self-harm, substance use disorders, and eating disorders as well as those who are survivors of trauma.
They shared these statistics with us: 158 females in Lenawee County seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year; 118 made a plan; 63 actually attempted it. This was only for the group of 7th graders. Imagine how much higher, they said, they would be if they included 10th graders and seniors.
Our community, they said, has limited treatment options as there are currently no long-term treatment programs located in Lenawee County. Girls may also experience limited access to other long-term residential treatment programs due to waitlists, treatment costs, and transportation barriers. H.E.R. Refuge aims to overcome these challenges by providing a high-quality residential treatment program in Lenawee County at no cost to those in need of this service. We are currently raising funds to make this dream become a reality by planning to build or secure an existing building. They are embarking on a $3M campaign.
The start-up costs are estimated to be $750,000 with an annual budget of another $750,000. Phase 1 will consist of raising 50% of the necessary funds.

President Carrie provided this update this past week:
A few weeks ago, we shared that Kathye Herrera was preparing for liver surgery. She has successfully undergone surgery and is now recovering at home. A home health aide will assist her three days a week as she heals, and drainage tubes are in place to aid the process. Let’s keep Kathye in our thoughts and prayers. She would greatly appreciate receiving cards from Rotary friends during her recovery. You can send a card to: Kathye Herrera 12000 Packard Rd Hudson, MI 49247
