TODAY'S SPEAKER - Gary Lutz

President Chip introduced today's speaker, Gary Lutz, who just moved to the area from Brentwood, Tennessee. He is a cybersecurity specialist for Community Hospital System (CSH). Gary is on the Awareness and Communication team at CHS. He is responsible for making sure that the technology of 90,000 staff and 300,000 clients is protected.

The main thrust of his message today was on 3 cybersecurity issues: "Phishing" - preventing scammer from accessing emails. "Smishing" - protecting text messages, and and "Vishing" - phone calls from scammers asking for personal information, routing numbers to bank accounts, etc

There has been a huge increase in the smishing area, Gary said. Scammers will oftentimes pull information from Linked accounts, he said. Once they see a phone number, the fraudulent messages begin. Gary suggested that when you receive a message like this, not to react too quickly.

You need to make sure to read messages carefully to insure that it is from a legitimate source. Ask yourself: "Are you expecting that call, that email or text message?" Instead of responding, send a separate message to the address listed or phone number given. Do not respond to the message itself if you think it strange. These people are actually "bad actors". They are "acting" and not legitimate. Be safe out there!
