Mary Murray, Chair of the club’s Literacy Program, introduced Kathy Sielsky, Reading Specialist at Michener Elementary, who graced our stage again and updated us on what taken place with the Fluency Friends program since the Pandemic last school year cut short the Rotary volunteers’ time with the kids in 2020. Incidentally, Mary mentioned that we have been working with Kathy for going on 7 years now and gave a special shout out to Tiffany Olsaver (Mike’s wife) was an integral part of helping to get the program up and running!Kathy began by saying that our club was certainly a part of the Michener family wi9th everything they have done for the students there with their reading program and thanked us for our “gifts of time, talent and treasure”! For the newer members, Kathy described the program in general, what the reading volunteers did every week and the donations our club has made that went toward purchasing books for each grade with our stickers in them that they would take home every summer. Volunteers, she said would work with each student on their rate, intonation, and expression while they were read to. The way you master reading is to practice, she said.
Kathye also thanked us for finishing the school year with a celebration that brough all member volunteers together as well as the students and partake in juice and donut holes to celebrate what everyone agreed was always a very successful year!
Thank you, Kathy, for this opportunity and for the pictures you shared with us and especially being able to see the smiles on everyone’s face even when they had masks on!
